The Need for Renovation

Constructed in 1924, “Building A” at The Miriam Hospital - the oldest building on the hospital campus - requires extensive renovations. The Miriam Hospital is proposing to remove Building A and replace it with a new building that will better utilize the space.

The renovation project will update both the emergency department (ED) and the hospital’s inpatient units. Through these critical upgrades, The Miriam Hospital aims to provide better care, improve patient outcomes, and meet the growing needs of our community. Construction will begin in the spring of 2025. The renovation project has an estimated cost of $125 million for completion, the majority to be funded through a centennial capital fundraising campaign, currently in its beginning phase. Emergency Department 

As part of The Miriam Hospital's renovation project, the emergency department will move from its current location to the first floor of the newly constructed Building A. This relocation is critical and will help provide:

• Shorter Wait Times: A more efficiently designed ED spaces mean patients receive care sooner.
• Increased Privacy: Currently patients are often four to a room separated by curtains. The renovation would add more private space for patient evaluation and care.
• Improved Coordination of Care: Provider communication and collaboration enhanced with new ED layout.
• Enhanced Behavioral Health Delivery: Specialized spaces needed to create a healing environment.
• Enhanced Imaging Suite: Reduce the time patients wait for scans and images.
• Enhanced Geriatric Care: Add design elements to help achieve goal of becoming one of only a few emergency departments in New England to be geriatric accredited.
• Physical environment:  Given the heightened need for prevention of transmissible illness, the renovation would add isolation rooms with private bathrooms. 

Inpatient Units

Nearly 70 percent of The Miriam Hospital’s licensed medical surgical beds are semi-private, causing inefficiencies and throughput issues. On average, 33 inpatient beds in semi-private rooms go underutilized due to patient condition, lack of privacy, isolation needs, gender, and fall risk. The new construction will address this issue by adding private rooms on the second and third floors of the building, significantly improving patient care and hospital efficiency.
