Brown University Health Outpatient Psychiatry provides patient-centric services in a caring, supportive environment. We offer psychiatric services through Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Newport Hospital, Morton Hospital, and Brown Health Medical Group, as well as Gateway Healthcare.

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis or is in need of mental health services, we are here to help. 

Staffed by a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed social workers and community treatment specialists, our program offers tailored, personal and coordinated treatment for patients age 18 and older who are experiencing a variety of mental health and behavioral health conditions.

Crisis telephone support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 401-723-1915 and 401-553-1031.  

Our Outpatient Psychiatry Treatment Programs

As part of our comprehensive approach to care, our staff will provide a thorough psychiatric evaluation and refer you to the appropriate specialty outpatient program as appropriate. This approach ensures an individually tailored treatment plan, customized to your needs.

The Programs We Offer

Electroconvulsive Therapy – This specialized treatment is for patients with intractable depression, bipolar disorder or schizoaffective disorder, and patients with a combination of psychiatric medical and neurological symptoms.

Family Therapy Program – This program helps families and couples deal with a wide range of relationship and psychiatric issues, using a multidimensional approach to evaluating and treating families.

Adult Gender and Sexuality Behavioral Health Program – This program offers psychosocial support, behavioral health and wellness services, including medication management, for anyone over 18 years who wishes to explore issues associated with their gender identity or gender transition.

Geriatric Psychiatry and Aging Families and Caregiver Program – Specialists trained in geriatric care provide psychiatric evaluations and ongoing treatment for seniors and their families who are struggling with the challenges that come with aging. We provide outpatient services for geriatric patients, as well as providing services to nursing homes in the community.

Clinica Latina – provides care with clinicians who are part of the Latin community. Treatment is available for patients age 18 and older, of all genders and sexuality. Services are provided in Spanish and English.

Brown University Health Recovery Center – Our center offers patients a multidisciplinary, evidence-based, recovery-oriented program that meets the full spectrum of medical and social needs of individuals who have opioid use disorders. Our team works collaboratively to provide medication-assisted treatment, including Buprenorphine and Naltrexone, in combination with psychosocial supports.

Neuropsychology Program – Our neuropsychology services include comprehensive memory and cognitive assessment and treatment recommendations for patients with known or suspected neurologic and neuropsychiatric disorders. We provide services at Rhode Island Hospital and our West River Street office in Providence.

Partial Hospital Program – Patients with acute psychiatric concerns receive intensive treatment during the day and return home in the evening. Within the overall program, are specialized tracks for young adults and patients with a history of trauma or abuse. These tracks are available at Rhode Island Hospital and Newport Hospital.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Center (TMS) – The TMS Program offers state-of-the-art treatment to patients suffering from major depression who have not benefited from medication or who are intolerant of medication side effects. It is innovative, FDA-approved treatment for major depression that expands the treatment options available for our patients.

Women's Behavioral Medicine  - Women's Behavioral Medicine offers specialized, personal help for a wide range of behavioral health issues exclusive to women, including mood and anxiety disorders during pregnancy and postpartum, pregnancy loss, infertility and mood and anxiety disorders related to the menstrual cycle and menopausal transition. 

Young Adult Outpatient Psychiatry – The program specializes in liaison with college and university campuses to provide timely and accessible treatment for undergraduate and graduate students.
