Take a Tour of the Electroencephalogram (EEG) Laboratory and Sleep Lab
Are you wondering what to expect at the pediatric electroencephalogram laboratory – EEG Lab? We ensure that our young patients experience a comfortable, private, and high-quality care environment while their care team of doctors, nurses, and staff progresses through their assessment and treatment.
Below is a guided tour of what you’ll find in our state-of-the-art EEG Lab that is located on the 10th floor of the Ambulatory Patient Center (APC) building at Rhode Island and its Hasbro Children's hospitals.
Upon your arrival for your appointment, you will receive a warm welcome from our staff.
Our Mural
You may notice a lively and colorful painted mural featuring underwater sea animals as you make your way to your room.
Your Own Private Room
Your comfortable and private room includes a seat for a guest to keep you company, a television, and may have a panoramic view of Providence.
Step One
Once you’re settled in, your technician explains each step of your test. The first step is to apply the electrodes (small metal discs) to your head. This might tickle a bit!
Getting a Head Wrap
When the electrodes are all in place, the technician may gently wrap your head with a covering to make sure everything stays in place.
Time to Relax
Then it’s time to relax and sleep while the technology gets to work.
Pinwheel Test
For some pediatric EEG patients, we may ask them to blow on a pinwheel to help us better understand their symptoms.
Flashing Light Test
For some pediatric EEG patients, we may expose them to a bright flashing light to help us better understand their symptoms.
While You Are Sleeping
While you are sleeping, our technicians are quietly monitoring your test on their computers.
Time to Choose a Prize
Once your test is completed, you can choose a prize from our treasure chest prize closet.
One Final Step
Before you leave, there’s one more task. Choose your favorite animal, add your fingerprint, and leave your mark on our mural.
