The Minimally Invasive Urology Institute becomes one of only a few locations in the United States to offer NanoKnife, a minimally invasive, ablation therapy for prostate cancer. The NanoKnife procedure is an outpatient procedure, providing a fast recovery time and allowing men to quickly return to their normal activities.
Minimally Invasive Urology Institute co-director, Gyan Pareek MD, FACS, is named Chief of Urology at Brown University Health Hospitals / Brown University and President of Brown Urology, Inc. Dr. Pareek is the Krishnamurthi Family Professor of Urology, Professor of Surgery (Urology) and Medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
The Innovation Center for Urologic Research and Education (iCURE), a new urologic research center located at The Miriam Hospital, is established. iCURE is committed to scientific advancement and research collaborations that nurture innovation and ultimately improve the health of patients. The first of its kind regionally, iCURE brings together surgeons, industry leaders, and scientists to focus on minimally invasive urology and create advanced solutions for urology patients.
Elias Hyams, MD, is named director of the prostate cancer program at The Miriam Hospital.
The Minimally Invasive Urology Institute becomes the only provider in Rhode Island to offer the ThuLEP procedure, an advanced laser technology that treats an enlarged prostate, which is performed by Sam Eaton, MD.
The Minimally Invasive Urology Institute upgrades its robotic offerings to the da Vinci Xi, enabling more precision and less invasiveness for the patient, and becomes the first in the region to perform a robotic Inferior vena cava thrombectomy and a robotic inguinal lymph node dissection.
Madeline Cancian, MD and Dr. Pareek perform Southern New England’s first robotic assisted laparoscopic ureteroplasty using a buccal mucosal graft.
The first robotic simple prostatectomy performed in the region occurs at the Minimally Invasive Urology Institute.
To improve the physical and emotional health of our patients, and to build their strength and endurance, we develop POWER Up (Pre-Operative Workout for Enhanced Recovery), an exercise program for individuals planning to undergo surgery at the Minimally Invasive Urology Institute. This “prehab” experience leads to better results following treatment and healthier lifelong habits.
Dragan Golijanin, MD, becomes one of the first 11 urologists nationwide, and the only physician in New England, to have successfully performed a robotic cystectomy with intracorporeal urinary diversion.
UroLift, a minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, becomes available at the Minimally Invasive Urology Institute.
The Minimally Invasive Urology Institute is formally established as the region’s first comprehensive institute for urology care, offering a patient education program to specifically help patients undergoing complex surgeries. Since then, patient education has remained a pillar of the Minimally Invasive Urology Institute mission. Our team of specialists share information with their patients specific to urologic health and awareness through individual consultation and our video library of resources. This helps patients and families gain a fuller understanding of their own urology health, options, treatment plan, and recovery.
Before Dr. Pareek and Dr. Golijanin formed the Minimally Invasive Urology Institute in 2014, they were delivering high-quality urology services with compassion and remarkable efficacy at The Miriam.
Maintaining its lead in providing patients with the most advanced technology in urology care, the Minimally Invasive Urology Institute upgrades its robotics to include the da Vinci Si.
The first robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical cystoprostatectomy in Rhode Island is performed.
Training future experts is at the foundation of the Minimally Invasive Urology Surgery fellowship program, which is integrated with Brown University’s School of Public Health. This two-year position has a primary focus on training academic minimally invasive urologists and creating future leaders in the field.
This was a year of several firsts for Rhode Island when the following procedures are performed: the first robotic partial nephrectomy, the first robotic pyeloplasty, and the first robotic ureterolithotomy.
The first robot-assisted adrenalectomy is performed in Rhode Island.
The Minimally Invasive Urology Institute is in its nascency when the first da Vinci robot is installed at The Miriam Hospital. Dr. Pareek, now co-director of the Minimally Invasive Urology Institute and chief of urology, performs Southern New England’s first robotic prostatectomy.
