When an older adult experiences mental illness, there may be special considerations that come into play.
Individuals who have dementia may be cared for at home or in a long-term care facility. His or her caregiver, often a spouse, may experience stress, anxiety, and isolation. Depression may affect a patient following a stroke, heart surgery, or a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. An older adult may be grieving the loss of a loved one and need help working through it, or substance use may be impacting their life.

Brown University Health’s geriatric psychiatry experts can help with these problems and more.
