The behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry (BNNP) fellowship program has been accredited and listed by the Unified Council of Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS) since 2021. This fellowship is funded and supported by Rhode Island Hospital and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University’s neurology department.
Drawing upon a decade of successful experiences with our previous aging and dementia fellowship program, this newly established fellowship program leverages years of experience, resources, and talent. The fellows of the BNNP program primarily will be trained for one year in the Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Disorders Center at Rhode Island Hospital.

Chuang-Kuo Wu, MD, the program director, has a rich history of clinical experiences, scientific knowledge, and education skills in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry. Under Dr. Wu’s leadership, this fellowship program provides not only the classic teaching of behavioral neurology of the Boston tradition, but also applies updated neurosciences to the clinical practice of BNNP, so that fellows will be well trained to become independent leaders and competent clinicians specialized in BNNP.
The fellowship program currently has five core faculty members - the executive director (Dr. Wu), one psychiatrist specialized and board-certified in BNNP, one neurologist specialized in aging and dementia disorders, one neuropsychologist specialized in diagnostic testing, and a researcher.
Rhode Island Hospital and Brown University also have a neuropathology service specializing in neurodegenerative disorders, well-known neuropsychological services, a geriatric psychiatry program, and a geriatric medicine program. Moreover, Brown Neurology is famous for its stroke service, epilepsy program, and participation in the neuro-oncology clinic at the Brown University Health Cancer Institute at Rhode Island Hospital, as well as specialized multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease/movement disorders clinics. Fellows also have access to Brown University’s Carney Institute for Brain Science for on-going basic neuroscience research.
