Sara Vargas, PhD, is a research scientist at the Center for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine at The Miriam Hospital and assistant professor (research) in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown Medical School. Dr. Vargas earned her doctoral degree from the University of Miami and completed postdoctoral training at Brown.
Dr. Vargas applies mixed (i.e., quantitative and qualitative) and community-based participatory research methods to the development of assessment tools and interventions to enable people to access the knowledge, motivation, and skills needed to engage in healthy behaviors.
Her work primarily centers on sexual and reproductive health promotion in military and civilian populations, patient experiences, and health-related quality of life. Beyond her own research, Dr. Vargas collaborates with colleagues within and outside of the Brown University Health system as a mixed methods expert. She also serves as a qualitative and mixed methods consultant for the Rhode Island Advance-CTR and the Qualitative Science and Methods Training Program.
