Total Joint Replacement Adult Reconstruction Fellowship

The fellowship provides advanced training in hip and knee reconstructive surgery and joint preservation techniques. The one-year fellowship program includes:

Experience with multiple surgeons and exposure techniques
Direct patient care
The opportunity to participate in clinical and basic science research projects

The fellow will:

Be credentialed as junior faculty and as a junior attending with senior staff/faculty support
Will have independent operating room and clinical privileges for cases appropriate to his or her level of expertise
Will meet monthly for performance evaluations with the program co-directors Thomas Barrett, MD and Eric Cohen, MD.
Mentor and train residents and medical students
Lead the weekly indications conference and coordinate resident presentations at the monthly adult conference
Facilitate the journal club presentations and discussion

Required educational conferences will include:

Monthly resident adult reconstructive conference
Adult Reconstruction Journal Club
Attendance at annual AAHKS and/or AAOS meeting
Hands-on cadaver course (once per year)
Weekly indications conference with faculty
Weekly grand rounds
Monthly Q&A at Rhode Island and The Miriam hospitals
Research meeting
Monthly reconstruction clinic

The fellow will operate at Rhode Island Hospital and the Total Joint Center at The Miriam Hospital.

How to Apply

Candidates must apply through SF Match, a third-party application service. The adult reconstruction fellowship participates in the match sponsored by the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.

The application form and supporting documentation must be submitted by the end of October, approximately two years preceding the appointment date. The academic year begins in late July or early August. Deadlines for the current year and more details can be found on the SF Match website.

Research Opportunities

The Lifespan/Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University Comprehensive Adult Reconstruction Fellowship offers opportunities to participate in a wide variety of basic, clinical, and translational research.

The Total Joint Center is participating in the function and outcomes research for comparative effectiveness in the Function and Outcomes Research for Comparative Effectiveness in Total Joint Replacement (FORCE-TJR) program, a national joint replacement registry developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The registry offers the opportunity to use the FORCE-TJR national database of more than 40,000 joint replacements to answer research questions requiring large databases. In addition, investigator-initiated research is ongoing into a wide variety of issues related to arthritis, joint replacement, and associated health care delivery.

Instruction and consultation are available in experimental design, regulatory compliance, professional writing, data management, statistics, and presentation through the clinical translational research program.
